According to the Department of Neuroscience, stress-related illness in the U.S. accounts for over 2/3 of doctor visits annually and half the deeaths of individuals under 65 years of age. Although stress management is a useful strategy for improved health, the biological mechanisms that underlie stress reduction are poorly understood. The Department of Neuroscience's research is focused on characterizing a novel neural mechanism that can be mobilized to rapidly reduce responses to stress.
